Gaza's First Locally Made Prosthetic Limb: A Beacon of Hope Amid Conflict

Hamad Hospital in the Sudania area of northern Gaza’s Shati camp was Gaza’s only facility specialized in fitting artificial limbs. Its destruction by the Israeli military during a ground invasion in November 2023 has left the strip without resources to address the growing need for artificial limbs resulting from injuries sustained in the ongoing Israeli aggression on Gaza. Amid the tents for the displaced west of Khan Younis, however, one tent has been dedicated to developing Gaza’s first locally made artificial limb.

In a personal initiative, recent graduates trained in prosthetics have used simple, readily available materials to create a prosthetic leg, fitting it for a young displaced man from northern Gaza who lost his left leg in an Israeli air strike on the Sheikh Radwan neighborhood of Gaza City in December 2023.
