CPO of the Week

CPO of the Week:  Mzwanele Qakaza from Durban, South Africa

Graduated in 2021 at the Walter Sisulu University and now works at Qakaza Orthopaedics Services,

What do you claim is your speciality - your O&P passion?
My passion is Orthotics (Braces) and being able to give people another chance or an opportunity to be themselves again and be able to fully function without any limitations.

What frustrates you about O&P?
Being in a private sector as this tends to limit the opportunities to practice my speciality and helping those who are seriously in need.

How do you build rapport with patients in your care?
Building trust with a patient depends on who they are, mostly to those who have little trust I give them assurance that I have their best interest at heart and always deliver accordingly and keep my promise.

What is your greatest patient story in O&P?
When I was working in a government hospital in PE I had a patient that was amputated as a result of an MVA and needed a refit of the amputated leg. I managed to build him one within a week which was way shorter period than he expected because it is a public hospital and these things tend to take long or even forever due to shortage of resources. The patient was very much appreciative and could not believe it, he later brought me biscuits (Choice Assorted) it was kind of awesome gesture given that it was during December holidays and you know how we love some Christmas biscuits as Africans.
