South Africa is brimming with talented individuals who defy the odds to achieve greatness. From sports stars to scientists, we are champions in every sense of the word. Yet, so often, the journey to success is self-funded and reliant on the unwavering determination of those chasing their dreams.
Sphelele Dlamini, a remarkable young man from Durban whose talent and resilience are paving the way for an incredible opportunity overseas, is one of these talented South Africans. And he desperately needs our help.
Sphelele is a double amputee wheelchair basketball athlete whose skill and dedication have caught the attention of the JDA Dijon Basketball Club in France. They’ve offered him the chance to play for their team during a 10-month season – a life-changing step toward his dream of becoming a professional wheelchair basketball player. This milestone would allow him to build a sustainable career and also provide financial support for his family, who currently rely solely on his disability grant.
Maggie Nyzell reached out to Good Things Guy to share Sphelele’s inspiring story and rally support for his cause.
“Sphelele is not only a dedicated athlete but also a role model for Jumping Kids, a charity that helps children get the prosthetics they need,” Maggie explained.
“He has worked hard on his own for months to fundraise for this trip, doing everything in his means. Nearly all expenses are covered. The ONLY thing still in his way is his accommodation.
Without accommodation, there is no visa. Without a visa, there is no trip.
I believe that life is hard enough as it is in South Africa. It is not fair for this young athlete to lose a life-changing opportunity because of it.”
Sphelele’s words drive home the importance of this opportunity.
