Syrian doctor Abdul Razzak Abdul Aziz, a specialist in general surgery and diabetic foot surgery, Damascus Hospital, received the Best Clinical Presentation Award at the annual Diabetic Foot Conference of the American Society for Limb Preservation in Los Angeles, California, USA.
Dr. Abdul Aziz told SANA correspondent, that his presentation was a summary of two published studies on the management and treatment of diabetic foot during the crisis period in Syria.
He added that the presentation included discussing the obstacles that the medical sector suffers from during crises in terms of the scarcity of medical supplies and the overcrowding of patients in hospitals.
The presentation was among 85 presentations from different countries of the world and was presented on behalf of the General Authority of Damascus Hospital by reviewing the charts of diabetic foot patients from 2012 to 2017 in the hospital, Dr.Abdul Razzak pointed out noting that it was the first article that addressed the reality of diabetic foot care in disaster situations and the development of low-cost materials for treating diabetic foot.
The importance of the presentation comes from the fact that diabetic foot patients are more vulnerable to neglect during crises due to the inability to detect wounds, deformities, and diseases of the surrounding arteries early, Dr. Abdul Razzak said.
