CPO of the Week

CPO of the Week: Cyrus Mwangi from Nairobi, Kenya

I studied a 3 years Diploma in Orthopaedic Technology course in Kenya Medical Training College, Nairobi and graduated in year 2018, majoring in orthotics and Prosthetics. Since graduating I've been unemployed but I've been practicing as a freelancing Orthopaedic Technologist working in conjunction with therapists and NGOs offering therapies to kids living with disabilities.

What is your greatest patient story in O&P?

Each and every patient story is great to me, they fuel me every single day. They keep me going, but I can't forget when I fitted bilateral prosthetics (Transfermoral and transtibial) to a 14 old months boy who had lost the limbs to gangrene. It was so touching and fulfilling to see the light in his eyes and the mother's shine.

What do you claim is your speciality - your O&P passion?

As much as I focus more on paediatric Orthotics, I specialise more in attending to the clients needs.

What do you like most about practising O&P?

One thing I like most about O&P is the self fulfillment that comes after prescribing and fitting an appliance.

What frustrates you about O&P?
I get frustrated with the technological gaps and the lack of awareness among the population.

How do you build rapport with patients in your care?
I create rapport by showing compassion and reassuring my clients. I also like to be realistic in my approach and enjoy little banters.
