CPO of the Week

CPO of the Week: Daniel Opoku-Gyamfi from Accra, Ghana

I studied a 3 years Bachelor of Orthotics and Prosthetics course in University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) and graduated in year 2024. Since graduating I'm seeking opportunities in research and academia.

What is your greatest patient story in O&P?

As Founding President of the Orthotics and Prosthetics Students' Association (OPSA), I collaborated with Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services (CRS) Ghana to distribute 3D-printed transradial prostheses to individuals with amputations who couldn't afford them. Witnessing the recipients' joy and improved functionality was profoundly fulfilling.

What do you claim is your speciality - your O&P passion?

Prosthetics, particularly in developing innovative solutions for thermal management and comfort in prosthetic sockets.

What do you like most about practising O&P?

Enhancing the quality of life for individuals with amputations or physical disabilities, and contributing to the advancement of Prosthetics and Orthotics education and research in low-resource settings.

What frustrates you about O&P?
Lack of national standardization in developing countries, leading to suboptimal conditions of service for P&O clinicians and compromised patient care.

How do you build rapport with patients in your care?
I prioritize empathy, active listening, and patient-centered care. I take time to understand each patient's unique needs, concerns, and aspirations, fostering trust and a supportive therapeutic relationship.

What are your Career Aspirations?
Become a renowned research scientist and professor in Prosthetics and Orthotics, driving innovation and educational advancements in low-resource settings.
