The theme of the 51st Academy Annual Meeting and Scientific Symposium, "Amplify Your Impact / Empower Our Future," invites us to reflect on the power of connection, learning, and collaboration within the prosthetics and orthotics profession.
In her opening remarks at the General Session, Susan Kapp, MEd, L/CPO, FAAOP(D), president of the American Academy of Orthotists and Prosthetists, set the tone for the meeting:
"It is truly an honor to be here with you today. These meetings foster a sense of belonging. They reinforce the power of connection, learning, and collaboration," she said.
As we step into the next 50 years of Academy meetings, it is a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come and look ahead to the innovations that will shape our profession.
A Profession Built on Connection
When asked why she has remained a dedicated member of the Academy throughout her career, Kapp’s response was simple: "The connections we build, the ideas we share, and the support we offer one another make it one of the most rewarding aspects of being part of this profession."
This sense of camaraderie and shared purpose has fueled remarkable advancements in the field. Recalling her first exposure to prosthetics, she shared the story of a college roommate who had to manually swap out her prosthetic foot to match her shoe choice for the day.
"At the time, the closest prosthetist was a two-hour drive away. We've come a long way since then—today, that same small town has a clinic, and my roommate now has an adjustable heel-height foot," Kapp said.
Technology continues to push the boundaries of what is possible. From microprocessor knees to wireless power transmission, innovation is redefining patient care. But at its core, prosthetics and orthotics remain a human-centered profession.
"Healthcare is about human beings caring for human beings," Kapp emphasized. "And our work is about much more than prostheses and orthoses; it’s about transforming the lives we touch every day."
The Academy’s Role in Shaping the Future
To understand what the Academy means to the next generation, Kapp posed a question to students: What is the Academy’s purpose? Their responses were insightful:
-
A shared knowledge base and resource
-
Access to research, new techniques, and technology
-
A network for seeking advice and mentorship
-
An advocate for legislative and policy initiatives
These reflections capture the essence of the Academy and the pillars that guide its work. The strength of the profession is built on the collective efforts of members, volunteers, and staff, who are dedicated to advancing education, research, and advocacy.
Amplifying Impact, Together
A mentor once told Kapp, "Find what you are passionate about." For her, that passion lies in patient care and education.
"There is nothing more rewarding than being a part of someone’s rehabilitation journey or witnessing the moment a concept 'clicks' for a student," she said.
That passion is what drives the Academy forward. "Your impact will empower their future," she reminded attendees. The knowledge and insights shared this week will shape patient care, strengthen professional bonds, and inspire innovation.
As Kapp closed her remarks, she left attendees with a call to action:
"Make the most of this week—learn, connect, and be inspired."
Welcome to the 51st Academy Annual Meeting & Scientific Symposium—a place to amplify your impact and empower the future.
