CPO of the Week

CPO of the Week:  Aftab Ahmad from Rawalpindi, Pakistan

Graduated from Pakistan Institute of Prosthetic and Orthotic Sciences University of Peshawar (PIPOS) in Pedhawar in 2004. I am currently working with Qamar Rehab Services and Medical & Rheumatology Centre in Rawalpindi.

What is your greatest patient story in O&P?

Once a soldier with TF amputation reported a high level of anxiety who didn't want to fit prosthesis as he was no more able to walk. I fitted a normal prosthesis and trained him to walk, he slowly came out of his complexion then I ask whether he wanted to run, he agreed and i fitted him with flex foot cheetah with total knee. He is now an active sports man.

What do you claim is your speciality - your O&P passion?

Prosthetics - When i joined AFIRM ( Armed Forces Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine) I established a state of the art department and fitted more then 5000 amputees including: earthquake amputees of October 2005; amputees of war against terrorism; civil amputees from diabetes and road traffic accidents.

What do you like most about practising O&P?

Learning new things. During all my time at AFIRM I was offered training abroad on basis of my performance and received 14 certifications including C-leg, Genium, Myobock upper limb, Digital elbow, Bebionic from Ottobock, lower limb advance certification from Ossur and CADCAM from Bioscluptor USA. I was also awarded with coin of performance for Amputee Rehabilitation services by US Army Rehabilitation Team.

What frustrates you about O&P?
I faced all level of amputations but what frustrates me is the (HO), Hertotropic Ossification, especially on amputations secondary to IED blast injuries.

How do you build rapport with patients in your care?
I always deal my patient with smiles and laughters and advise them that after fitting they will be happy with what has happened to him, they will do more then they could do before amputation. I all the time succeeded and they feel at home when they are with me and want more activities.
