CPO of the Week

CPO of the Week:  Angelique Uwamahoro from Kigali, Rwanda

Graduated with a diploma in Orthopaedics Technology from University of Dar Es Salaam in 2004. I am currently Managing Director of  Ortho Promed in Kigali in Rwanda.

What do you claim is your speciality - your O&P passion?

Prosthetics, specifically lower limb prosthetics. I am truly fascinated by the advancements in technology and the impact it can have on improving the quality of life for those in need of prosthetic devices.

What do you like most about practising O&P?

The opportunity to work closely with patients and make a meaningful difference in their lives. Seeing the positive impact that a well-fitted and designed prosthetic device can have on someone's mobility and overall well-being is incredibly rewarding.

What frustrates you about O&P?

The lack of awareness and understanding among the general public about the field and the importance of proper prosthetic care. There is still a stigma attached to wearing prosthetic devices, and I believe it is important to educate others on the benefits and possibilities that can come from O&P services.

What is your greatest patient story in O&P?

Working with a young athlete who lost his leg in a tragic accident. Through our collaboration, we were able to design a custom prosthetic leg that allowed him to not only walk again but also continue pursuing his passion for sports. Seeing him thrive and excel in his athletic endeavors was incredibly fulfilling.

How do you build rapport with patients in your care?

Taking the time to listen to their needs and concerns, and involving them in the decision-making process every step of the way. I strive to create a supportive and collaborative environment where patients feel heard, respected, and empowered in their journey towards mobility and independence.
